Fishkeeping

Hi!, this is the first of my five blogs, and altogether! ;).

I will be discussing my feelings and thoughts on the subject of Fish keeping (Aquarium), Fish keeping is a popular hobby concerned with keeping fish in a home aquarium or to a lesser extent a garden pond. I have recently installed a salt water aquarium of my own, however there aren't any varieties of fish or plants yet!

Origin and History of Fishkeeping

Fish have been raised as food in pools and ponds for thousands of years. Many other cultures keep fish for both functional (food) and decorative purposes.

Ancient Sumerians(5th millennium BC)kept wild-caught fish in ponds, before preparing them for meals. Depictions of the sacred fish of Oxyrhynchus (a city, 160 km south-southwest of Cairo) kept in captivity in rectangular temple pools have been found in ancient Egyptian art.

Similarly, Asia has experienced a long history of stocking rice paddies with freshwater fish suitable for eating, including various types of catfish and cyprinid . Selective breeding of carp into today's popular and completely domesticated koi and goldfish began over 2,000 years ago in Japan and China, respectively. The Chinese brought goldfish indoors during the Song Dynasty to enjoy them in large ceramic vessels. We can also see that goldfish is a common and cheap freshwater fish that are sold domestically to the public, and Koi fishes are those that you may of seen in china town restaurant.

Here at my right is a picture of a bunch of Koi fishes and above is a picture of a single Goldfish, the latter is one of the most commonly known and easily available fish in the market internationally and as well as domestically (Pakistan, they are normally kept in a round bowl shape tank, which may i add is severely cruel and harmful to these fishes as they get killed by there own feces (by a build up of nitrogen based toxins and decaying food that would reach toxic levels, basically dieing from ones own waste) so essentially a fish bowl can never be sufficient enough to take care of your fishes as there is no space for a filtration system (a filter which helps to oxygenate water and cleans toxins)

In Medieval Europe, carp pools were a standard feature of estates and monasteries, providing an alternative to meat on feast days when meat could not be eaten for religious reasons.

Salt water fish have been similarly valued for centuries. Wealthy Romans kept lampreys and other fish in salt water pools.

Types of Fishkeeping system

In general there are three types of fish keeping systems, these are;
  • Fresh water
  • Marine water (commonly known as Salt water) and
  • Brackish water (a combination of salt and fresh water)

Fresh water fish keeping is by far the most popular choice, as they are economical and are easy to take care of, personally i agree it is a rarity to see salt water fish keeping in homes i have only seen fresh water fish keeping whenever i would visit family or friends homes,I personally prefer salt water fish keeping even though they are much harder to take care of and are more expensive to buy salt water fishes, this disadvantage for me gets completely overshadowed by the fact that visually a salt water fish tank displays an exotic array of colourful vibrant fishes that are captivating and beautiful, to me i simply see it as a part or collection of the ocean in the convenience of my home,

These pictures show my own recently installed fish tank as you can its empty!, it has a total of three different coloured light, normal, blue and pink the latter and former are shown below;

Ive simply added this video purely for amazement and its marvel, enjoy!
